Done in the 1890s when Gifford was producing some of his greatest work.
This watercolor is a very nice pastoral done in the 1890s, when Gifford was producing some of his greatest work. This piece shows grazing sheep on the shores of Naushon – one of the islands in the Elizabeth Islands chain in Buzzards Bay.
The colors are very bold greens and rust with more than a half dozen sheep on the shore and the ridge. A rocky coastline and blue waters show a sailboat off in the distance under a blue sky.
The signature is bold, clear and dated 1898.
The frame is gold leaf with a French line mat.
